Today we celebrate the Feast of the Apostles, Saints Simon and Jude. We know little about them, but their lives were foundational to our faith, which is the very message of the first reading: we are "built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone."
These two men, like the other Apostles chosen in the Gospel, were given the incredible mission to carry the Truth of Jesus Christ to the world. St. Jude's small letter in the Bible is a fervent plea to fight for the faith; St. Simon is traditionally known as the Zealot, passionate for the law, whose passion was redirected for Christ. They became God's tools to build His Church.
Think about the Gospel: Jesus spends the whole night in prayer and then calls twelve ordinary men. Not just Peter, James, and John, but also Simon the Zealot and Jude, who was confused with the traitor. They weren't spiritual giants at the start; they were a motley team of fishermen, tax collectors, and political zealots. Yet, they were chosen.
Their lives tell us that your background, your past failures, or your social standing don't disqualify you. God simply chooses the willing and makes them mighty. He's called us too, through our baptism and confirmation, to be built upon this same foundation.
Brothers and sisters, like Simon and Jude, we are called to be the Lord’s building blocks. We are called to speak the Truth of Christ, to be tools of God's grace in our homes and workplaces, and to work as a team—the Church—in spreading the Gospel. Let us pray today for the zeal of Simon and the intercession of Jude, the patron of lost causes, to faithfully fulfill our own call. Amen.
