My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today's readings speak powerfully about the radical freedom that comes from being God's children.

In the first reading, St. Paul tells us we have received the Spirit of adoption, by which we cry out, "Abba, Father!" No longer are we slaves to fear or to the flesh. The Spirit of God is a spirit of liberty, giving us the power to live as sons and daughters, not as bond-servants. This is a dignity we often forget. We are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—a profound and precious inheritance.

The Gospel then gives us a stunning example of what this freedom looks like in action. Jesus sees a woman who has been bent over for eighteen years, a "daughter of Abraham" bound by illness. On the Sabbath, a day meant for worship and rest, the synagogue ruler is concerned with a rigid application of the law. But Jesus is concerned with fulfilling the true spirit of the law: love and liberation. He straightens her, setting her free from her affliction on the very day meant to celebrate freedom and creation.

The healing of the woman wasn't just a miracle; it was a profound act of divine love that shattered an oppressive legalism. Jesus asks, "Ought not this woman... be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?" The answer is a resounding yes!

Brothers and sisters, the message is clear. We are called to live in the freedom of God's children, acknowledging God as our loving Father, and ensuring our actions are fulfilling the true command of love, especially when we see others weighed down, bent over, or in need of help. Don't let rigid rules or fear stop you from being an instrument of Christ's liberating love today. Amen.
