Today's readings and the lives of Saints Cosmas and Damian call us to look beyond the immediate moment and embrace the eternal, through the lenses of Glory, Glimpse, and Grit.
In the First Reading, God offers a magnificent promise of Glory. He tells the people not to despair because the new Temple seems meager compared to the first; its latter Glory "shall be greater than the former," for the "Desired of all nations shall come." We hold onto this promise: our struggles and sacrifices today will result in a greater, more profound Glory with God in eternity.
The Gospel gives us a necessary Glimpse of the path to that glory. Peter confesses, "You are the Christ of God." He gets a Glimpse of Jesus’ divine power. But immediately, Jesus shifts the focus to the cross—the suffering and rejection before the rising again. We must hold both truths: Christ is King, and the path to His Kingdom involves the cross.
Saints Cosmas and Damian, unmercenary physicians, are examples of Grit. Their commitment to healing, freely given, and ultimately their martyrdom, show the Grit required to follow the Christ Peter confessed. They knew the cross was part of the journey. Grit is the enduring resolve, the spirit that perseveres through suffering, knowing the greater Glory awaits.
Let us be people of Grit, keeping our eyes fixed on Christ’s Glory, accepting the suffering of the cross, and living on the basis of that divine Glimpse of truth. Amen.
