"The tension between David and Saul reaches a climax today. Saul enters a cave to relieve himself, unaware that David and his men are hiding deep inside. David has the perfect chance to end his nightmare. But he chooses Mercy.
Let’s reflect on Mercy, Mountain, and Mission.
First, Mercy. David’s men urge him to kill Saul. It seemed logical; it seemed like justice. But David refuses to touch 'the Lord’s anointed.' He cuts a piece of cloth instead of cutting Saul’s throat. This is a profound lesson: just because we can destroy our enemy, doesn’t mean we should. Mercy requires more strength than vengeance.
Second, the Mountain. In the Gospel, Jesus goes up the mountain to call His apostles. Before He gives them a job, the Scripture says He called them 'to be with Him.' This is crucial. Before we do any work for God, we must go to the Mountain of prayer. We must 'be with Him.'
Only after being with Him comes the Mission. He sends them out to preach and drive out demons. We cannot have the Mission without the Mountain. If we try to serve God without praying, we burn out. And if we pray but never show Mercy to others, our prayer is empty.
Today, is there someone you need to show Mercy to? And when was the last time you climbed the spiritual Mountain just to sit with Jesus, before rushing into your Mission?"
