Brothers and sisters in Christ, today we celebrate the Holy Guardian Angels, a wonderful reminder of God’s personal, constant care for each of us. Our readings converge on three powerful themes for our spiritual life: Law, Littleness, and Light.
First, the Law. In the First Reading, the people listen to Ezra read the Law, and they weep as they understand their failings. Yet, they are told to stop mourning, because the "joy of the Lord is our strength." The Law is a gift and a guide, not a burden. It shows us where we have strayed, but the true goal is the joy that comes from obedience to God’s will, a joy the angels share in His presence.
Second, Littleness. The Gospel is clear: to be great in the Kingdom, we must "humble [ourselves] like this child." This theme of littleness and humility is crucial. St. Thérèse, whom we honored yesterday, lived this. Today, Jesus says, "See that you do not despise one of these little ones," because they are important enough to have a Guardian Angel. Humility is not self-contempt; it is the honest recognition of our utter reliance on God.
Finally, Light. The reason we should not despise the little ones is because "their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father." Our Guardian Angel lives in the Light of God’s immediate presence, serving as a messenger and protector, shining a personal, providential light on our path. They are our constant companions, guiding us away from harm and toward holiness. This is God’s greatest love—to assign a powerful celestial being to watch over you.
Let us find joy in the Law of the Lord, embrace the humility of Littleness like a child, and trust in the celestial Light of our Guardian Angel, who seeks nothing less than our salvation. Amen.
