Our readings today call us to a critical spiritual self-assessment using three words: Revelation, Remember, and Readiness.
The First Reading speaks of Revelation. The author critiques those who were "naturally stupid" because, even though they were surrounded by the beauty of creation—the stars, the sea, the swift air—they failed to deduce the Creator. The creation is a profound Revelation of God's majesty! The grandeur of the world is a mirror. If we can understand the world, the reading asks, "how have they been so slow to find its Master?" We are called to look at the world with the eyes of faith and see the glory of God in all things.
The Gospel gives us a powerful warning: Remember. Jesus says, "Remember Lot’s wife." She was so attached to what she was leaving behind in Sodom that she looked back and was lost. We, too, are constantly tempted to look back—to the sins we left behind, to the attachments we should have given up, to the worldly life we try to balance with faith. Jesus' call to Remember is a call to focus our gaze forward on the Kingdom of God.
This focus is essential for our Readiness. Jesus says the Son of Man will come when life seems completely normal, just like in the days of Noah and Lot. People were eating, drinking, buying, and selling right up to the very last moment. There will be no time to "go down to take things away" from the house. Our faith is not a switch we can flip at the last minute; it must be a constant state of Readiness. Revelation shows us God's power. Remembering Lot’s wife warns us against attachment. Together, they call us to a holy Readiness to meet the Lord at any moment. Amen.
