In the Gospel, we hear the request from the mother of James and John for her sons to have places of honor in Jesus' Kingdom. While the request itself shows a misunderstanding of Jesus' mission, it also points to their family's early commitment to following Jesus. James, along with his brother John and Peter, was part of Jesus' inner circle, witnessing transformative events like the Transfiguration and the agony in the garden. This deep commitment led him to leave everything behind to follow Christ, demonstrating a radical dedication that we are all called to emulate in our own lives of faith. Our commitment to Christ means putting Him first, regardless of the cost.
Jesus' response to the ambitious request highlights what it truly means to be Christ-like. He speaks of drinking the cup He will drink and being baptized with the baptism He will be baptized with—a clear reference to suffering and sacrifice. He teaches that true greatness in His Kingdom is found not in lording over others, but in serving, and in being a "ransom for many." The First Reading from 2 Corinthians echoes this, speaking of carrying "the death of Jesus in our bodies, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies."
