In the Gospel, we hear the request from the mother of James and John for her sons to have places of honor in Jesus' Kingdom. While the request itself shows a misunderstanding of Jesus' mission, it also points to their family's early commitment to following Jesus. James, along with his brother John and Peter, was part of Jesus' inner circle, witnessing transformative events like the Transfiguration and the agony in the garden. This deep commitment led him to leave everything behind to follow Christ, demonstrating a radical dedication that we are all called to emulate in our own lives of faith. Our commitment to Christ means putting Him first, regardless of the cost.

Jesus' response to the ambitious request highlights what it truly means to be Christ-like. He speaks of drinking the cup He will drink and being baptized with the baptism He will be baptized with—a clear reference to suffering and sacrifice. He teaches that true greatness in His Kingdom is found not in lording over others, but in serving, and in being a "ransom for many." The First Reading from 2 Corinthians echoes this, speaking of carrying "the death of Jesus in our bodies, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies." To be Christ-like is to embrace humility, service, and even suffering for the sake of the Gospel, allowing Christ's life to shine through us.

Finally, the life of Saint James perfectly embodies courage. He was the first Apostle to be martyred, facing persecution and death for his faith. This act of ultimate sacrifice demonstrates immense courage, a willingness to stand firm in belief even in the face of extreme danger. The readings remind us that being a disciple requires a certain boldness and fortitude—the courage to serve, the courage to suffer, and the courage to proclaim the Gospel even when it is unpopular or dangerous. Saint James' example inspires us to be fearless in our faith and to declare Christ's truth, whatever the personal cost.

As we honor Saint James today, let us renew our commitment to Christ, strive daily to be more Christ-like in our humility and service, and pray for the courage to live and proclaim our faith boldly.
