Faith, Family, Friendship. In the Philippines, these three F's are not just words but the very pillars of life. Our Faith is profound, a deep wellspring of resilience evident in our strong devotion and trust in a compassionate God, much like Moses's intimate relationship with the Lord. Like Martha, who declared her unwavering belief in Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life even in her sorrow, Filipinos hold onto their faith amidst life's trials, finding strength and hope in every hardship, big or small. Our churches are not just buildings; they are extensions of our homes, filled with fervent prayers and vibrant fiestas that reflect our joyful spirit, a spirit sustained by an enduring belief in God's mercy and grace.
The concept of Family (pamilya) is central to every Filipino. Just as Martha, Mary, and Lazarus shared a bond of siblinghood and welcomed Jesus into their home, Filipino families are close-knit, extending beyond immediate relatives to encompass the wider community. We are taught to care for our elders, support our siblings, and open our homes to visitors, embodying the spirit of hospitality that Saint Martha championed. This familial love is a source of strength, comfort, and enduring joy, mirroring the divine compassion mentioned in the Exodus reading.
Lastly, Friendship (pakikisama, barkada) is deeply valued. Moses's relationship with God as a friend, and Jesus's friendship with the Bethany siblings, resonate strongly. Filipinos cherish their friends, treating them like family, sharing burdens and triumphs. In a society where bayanihan, or communal spirit, thrives, genuine friendships become vital support systems, creating a sense of belonging and mutual care. This extends to how we welcome others, whether they are new acquaintances or long-lost relatives; true friendship offers comfort and understanding, much like the consolation sought by Martha and Mary.
These three F's—Faith, Family, and Friendship—form the bedrock of Filipino life, guiding us through challenges and enriching our everyday existence. They are the gifts we receive and the blessings we share, keeping the heart of the Filipino burning brightly.
