Today, July 23, 2025, as we observe the optional memorial of Saint Bridget of Sweden, our readings invite us to reflect on the themes of Provision, Preaching, and Perseverance.

The First Reading from Exodus vividly illustrates God's provision for His people. Despite the Israelites' grumbling and lack of faith in the desert, God hears their cries and miraculously provides them with manna and quail. This divine act reminds us that even in times of scarcity or uncertainty, God is faithful to His promises and will provide for our needs. He knows what we truly require, often even before we ask, and His generosity transcends our limited expectations. This reminds us to trust in His fatherly care, especially when our resources seem meager.

The Gospel presents Jesus' preaching through the Parable of the Sower. Jesus describes how the seed (the word of God) falls on different types of ground, yielding varying results. This parable is a powerful illustration of how God's word is sown abundantly, but its effectiveness depends on the receptivity of the hearer. Jesus' method of teaching through parables was a form of profound preaching, inviting deeper reflection and understanding. It challenges us to examine the "soil" of our own hearts: are we receptive ground, ready to hear and bear fruit from the divine seed?

Finally, both readings and the life of Saint Bridget of Sweden call us to perseverance. The Israelites, despite receiving God's miraculous provision, continued to complain and test His patience. Their journey required perseverance in faith, even when circumstances were difficult. The Parable of the Sower highlights the need for perseverance to bear fruit—the good soil produces a harvest because it allows the seed to take root and grow. Saint Bridget of Sweden, a mystic, a mother, and a founder of a religious order, exemplified extraordinary perseverance. She endured personal loss, dedicated herself to prayer, received visions, and diligently worked for Church reform throughout her life. Her unwavering commitment to God's will, despite challenges and opposition, stands as a testament to the power of perseverance in faith.

As we continue our journey of faith, let us trust in God's unfailing provision, open our hearts to His divine preaching, and strive for perseverance in living out His word, just as Saint Bridget of Sweden did.
