Yesterday, we wore white for the crib. Today, we wear red for the cross. It seems jarring, doesn't it? One day after Christmas, we celebrate St. Stephen, the first martyr. But the connection is deep. Our words are Forgiveness, Faithfulness, and Fearlessness.

First, Fearlessness. Jesus warns in the Gospel: "You will be hated by all because of my name." Following the babe of Bethlehem eventually requires the courage of a soldier. Stephen faced his accusers not with anger, but with the face of an angel. He was fearless because he knew that the baby born yesterday had already conquered death.

Second, Faithfulness. Stephen was faithful "unto the end." It is easy to be a Christian on Christmas Day when the food is good and the music is sweet. It is harder to be a Christian on December 26, when the cleaning up begins, or when the world goes back to being hostile to the Gospel. Stephen teaches us that faith is a 365-day commitment, not a seasonal decoration.

Third, and most importantly, Forgiveness. As Stephen was being stoned to death, he prayed, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." He echoed Jesus on the Cross. This is the ultimate test of Christmas peace. Can you forgive those who hurt you? St. Stephen shows us that the power of the Incarnation is the power to love your enemies.

Action: Is there a grudge you are holding? Today, pray specifically for the happiness of that person. You don't have to talk to them yet if you aren't ready, but pray for them.
