In today's Gospel, we see Peter, an ordinary fisherman, stepping out of the boat and walking on water. This is an incredible act of faith and courage. We can all relate to being "in the boat," surrounded by the storms of life—whether they are personal anxieties, financial struggles, or health concerns. The world often tells us to stay safe, to not take risks. But Peter, in this moment, was courageous. He dared to step out of his comfort zone, not because of his own strength, but because he was called by Jesus to do so.
But Peter's journey wasn't without its challenges. The moment he took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the storm, he began to sink. This is a powerful lesson for all of us, from the busy professional to the student, the parent, and the elderly. How often do we start with a strong intention, only to be distracted by the "strong winds" of life? We are called to be conscientious—to be mindful of where our focus lies. Like Peter, we must remember to keep our eyes fixed on Christ, especially when we feel like we are sinking.
The beautiful part of this story is not that Peter succeeded perfectly, but that when he failed, he immediately cried out, "Lord, save me!" And Jesus, without hesitation, reached out and took his hand. This reminds us that we are all called to a relationship with God, and that call is one of constant renewal and support. Whether we are at the peak of our faith or in the depths of doubt, God is always there, ready to pull us back up. Our journey may be a series of stepping out and sinking, but as long as we continue to cry out to the Lord, we are never truly alone.
